Musk Lorikeet Australian Parrot

The hardest part of my job as a vet is accepting euthanasia as a viable option for a healthy animal that an owner no longer wants. It does not get easier when it is a geriatric pet in excellent shape that has a manageable condition like arthritis. I unfortunately have not been able to save everything because physically I could simply not. But all those times i had to be passive when multiple kittens were being put down, I lost a little piece of my heart. I felt like an accomplice in a crime I detest. Over the years, my home has acted like a shelter. I have rehabilitated and rehomed many animals thanks to the support of my husband and loving animals. I will forever continue to do so because every animal life is precious and worth fighting for….

We often get wild birds hit by cars that are in shock. You simply stick them in a cage and let them settle and get warm then examine them for wounds. This little guy just seemed too calm and perked up nicely and didn’t overly react to human interaction.
I called a wildlife carer and she informed me that Musk lorikeets are used to humans because they come close to us to eat our fruit trees and learn to be quiet around humans. I was therefore asked to release him when I see a group of them around. I so happened to live in an area that had a huge flock. He happily joined his mates.
He was a beautiful creature and I can see why people would opt to keep him but it is unfair to keep a wild bird caged. It is a whole different story if it is a hand raised parrot as it would not stand a chance to survive in the wild. So look but don’t keep.

I was born overseas and grew up in Lebanon. About 9 years ago, I left my family and friends behind to pursue my dream of becoming a veterinarian in Australia.

I have now been out in practice for the past 5 years. I absolutely love being involved with all types of animals and consider it my "calling". Whilst my job can be quite an emotional rollercoaster ride, I cannot fathom doing anything else for as long as I am living. I simply feel blessed every day that I am practicing what I truly love.
