A Sharing From Ipoh (Akmars)

Here’s a sharing from Akmar, all the way from Ipoh:

Dear Dr. Chan,
My name is Akmar and I’ve been informally ‘introduced’ to your blog
ever since the Petknode fiasco. I must say that I really appreciate
your efforts in educating the public on responsibility towards the
animals. For as long as I could remember, it has been a long time
since I had last seen a group of people who are so passionate about
the cause and I’m so glad that I’ve found others who share the same
point of view as I am.

FYI, I’m currently living in the northern part of Perak and getting a
vet service here is a bit difficult since this place is more like a
hillbilly-type. Nevermind about that, here I would like to highlight
on another sort of so-called typical ‘Malaysian Behavior’ when it
comes to animals.

My husband and I recently brought two cats back in our place as our
companions. Since we are both working, we felt it is best for us to
have two cats as they could be a company to each other. The two cats,
Bobby (a ‘teenage’ tom) and Pretty (a ‘teenage’ tabby) were strays and
they have been with each other since the beginning (they were fostered
by my mother-in-law before we decided to brought them into our home).
Since my husband and I work different hours, we felt that the
arrangements are suitable for us to take care of the two cats without
leaving them alone for such long hours.

For the past weeks, we have been familiarising Bobby and Pretty to our
neighbourhood. Some neighbours have spotted them and recognized them
as our cats. We have yet to get them collars with tags, but I had
somehow slit a small paper with our contact information on their
collars just in case if our cats got lost and couldn’t find their way
home.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t find Bobby the other day. The issue of him
being on heat is totally out since we had already spayed both cats, so
I suspected that someone had ‘cat-napped’ him. We had already ruled
out him being chased out of the neighbourhood by other toms since he
had experienced that before, but he returned to our house, safe and
sound.

The thing that I want to highlight here is that there are certain type
of people who claimed that they are animal lovers, but refused to take
on strays as a way to save them. They feel that any cats/dogs who
walked into their home are plain strays, even if they have tags on
them. They don’t bother asking around whether there’s an owner
desperately looking for them, or whether the pet actually have another
companion waiting for them in their owner’s home. These people love
looking at the pretty ones without bothering to take a good care of
them in the first place and in the end, abandoned them when the
excitement wears off (like what happened to the Siberian Husky
fostered by Lee).

These days, we can see the effect of Bobby’s lost on Pretty.. she is
not her jovial self, always crying out for Bobby and is not eating
much as she used to. My husband said that she missed him so much since
they have been playmates since they were kittens. In my mind, I
secretly hoped that Bobby will freely poo and pee in the taker’s
house, with hopes that the person will release him. But that’s a long
shot, eh..?

Anyway, please keep on doing what you’re doing Dr Chan… spread on
the awareness on our society towards the betterment of the animals and
humankind..

Thank you.
