When we see chubby pooches, our first reaction is usually Oh so cute! Yet, underneath the layers of fats and furry cuteness, there lies many different health problems that are associated with obesity in dogs. Some of the health problems that your dog may develop because of its weight are painful arthritis, heart disease, breathing difficulty, diabetes and even bladder cancer. Needless to say, obesity in dogs is a problem that needs to be tackled so that it will not impede on their lifestyle and health.

How do you tell if your dog is overweight? You can check by placing your hands on its side. Are you able to feel its ribs? If it is difficult to feel your dogs ribs or even impossible to feel it, it is likely to be overweight.

Food and feeding habits play very important roles in treating an overweight dog. Make sure your dog gets a low-fat and low-calorie diet with regular exercise so that it can stay fit and healthy.

For a more accurate diagnosis and treatment options for your dog, please consult the veterinarian!
