Guide Dog Saves Blind Woman From Burglars

MAY 4, 2013: Yolanda the service dog is viewed as a hero by many. But to her owner, Christina Colon, she is much more than that.

“Maybe for you she is the hero,” Colon said. “But for me, she is my angel.”

Colon, who is blind, was sleeping early Friday morning when she was awakened around 3 a.m. by the sound of Yolanda growling beside her bed. Colon then heard two male voices downstairs inside her home on the 4700 block of Marple Street in North Philadelphia. Colon says her guide dog pulled her door shut and took off downstairs, chasing the men out of the home.

“She protects me every time,” said Colon.

But the danger wasn’t over for Colon. Before fleeing, police say the intruders turned on the stove, filling the home with natural gas. Christina says she stumbled to her phone and called police.

“Please, I can’t breathe!” she screamed.

Much to Colon’s surprise however, the dispatcher informed her that police were already outside her door. Several minutes earlier, Yolanda had already pressed an emergency phone in Colon’s home, alerting the authorities.

“I love you so much!” said Colon to her beloved friend and protector. “Thank you!”

Police identified one of the suspects as 18-year-old Tomayo McDuffy, who lives on the same block as Colon. He was arrested and charged with burglary, criminal trespassing and causing or risking a catastrophe. Police are still searching for his alleged accomplice.
