# Things to Consider before Adopting a Cat from SSPCA:

1. Is your Family ready for a Cat? Make sure everyone in the house is prepared to have a cat before your new pet comes home.

2. Giving a cat (or dogs)as a gift- We DO NOT encourage this as they are living breathing beings and not a disposable toy or item. Having a pet needs research and preparation and is a 10-20 years commitment(at least!). When you hear of people who plan to give a pet as a gift, please take the opportunity to educate them. Animals cannot speak for themselves, but you can be their voice.

3. Be Patient & Take it slowly- Socialization is very important for kittens, but it can take a few weeks for a cat to relax in a new environment. Its a great idea to keep the new addition secluded in a single room or its own personal cage (with a litter box, food and water, toys) until the cat is used to the new surroundings, especially if you have other pets. SSPCA offers cages on loan with a deposit of RM50.

4. Build your cat into your budget- Budget short & long term costs so youre not caught off guard. E.g. Vaccination, Pet boarding when you go traveling, food & toys. SSPCA has already included your cat’s neutering fee in the adoption fee (RM60 for kittens & RM30 for adult cats).

5. Cat-proof your home- A new cat will quickly teach you not to leave things lying out. Food left on the kitchen counter will teach your new friend to jump on counters seeking snacks. Get rid of loose items your cat might chew on such as electrical cords, paper clips etc.

6. Two is better than One- Cats need exercise and social interaction. Two cats can provide this for each other. They can keep each other company while you are not around.

7. Vet a Vet- Choose and visit with a veterinarian ahead of time and schedule a visit within the first few days following the adoption. Refer to our Notes for a list of clinics around Kuching.
