Latest on SPCAs Appeal for Jail Term for Businessman (Lim Soo Seng) convicted for Pet Neglect

- The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) assesses that the S$10,000 fine imposed, the maximum fine under the law, was not manifestly inadequate, and therefore, did NOT appeal against that – hence, there would be NO JAIL TERM over and above the S$10,000 fine

The AGC has responded to SPCAs appeal a month, or so, after our letter to them (dated 5 May, 2014) asking for a court sentence that would be MORE IN LINE with general community expectations. At the very least, we opine that a jail term for Lim Soo Seng would send a stronger, more severe message of deterrence that cruelty against animals is NOT to be tolerated at all.

While the SPCA recognises that this is the first time the maximum fine has been given, we STILL believe that this is INSUFFICIENT for such an extreme and torturous act of neglect and cruelty against an innocent and defenceless animal.

We thank our thousands of online supporters and commenters and counting – who have spoken up unreservedly for the dead dog Chilli, some of whom have even offered to initiate an online petition for a jail term for the offender.

We deeply appreciate the immense support of greater justice for Chilli, but at this point in time (considering the sentence was passed on April 24, 2014) we will accept the AGCs suggestion that they will explore with us how the association may assist in this regard.

We thank the AGC for assuring us all that they take a serious view of acts of cruelty to animals.
