Guess Whos Coming To Best Friends? The World!

Best Friends Angel Canyon, black dog

For the first time in its history, the internationally respected travel guide Fodor’s Travel named a No. 1 world travel destination for 2016, rather than its usual collection of equally worthy locations, and it chose Utah. More to the point, visiting Best Friends Animal Sanctuary was picked as one of the top 25 “must do” activities in Utah for 2016!

The pressing getaway questions for those of us who work at Best Friends go something like this: Shall we explore some ancient archeological sites on the Sanctuary grounds? Take a day trip to one of four nearby national parks or recreation areas? Spend the weekend in Monument Valley, or one of the “mighty five” national parks that aren’t already in our backyard? Then again, maybe we should just hang with the dogs, cats, bunnies, birds or horses and settle for some fine dining at Chef Shon Foster’s Sego Restaurant in Kanab. It’s a tough life!

The truth is that almost the entire state is worthy of national park status and as I drive from point A to point B in Utah, I make frequent stops to take in the awe-inspiring views and ask the recurring question, “Why isn’t this a national park?”

One of the things that first-time visitors to Best Friends always repeat is that however grand their expectations of the Sanctuary and Angel Canyon, those expectations are always exceeded. That’s gratifying, but not surprising because no matter how hard we try to describe it, words and images just never match up to the firsthand reality of the Sanctuary. So, if you haven’t been to Best Friends, please take this as a formal invitation to spend time with the animals and allow the magic of the Sanctuary and this amazing natural beauty to fill your heart and heal your soul.

Perhaps the best description of Best Friends and our immediate environs was written for one of our early mailers: “Angel Canyon is a miracle of nature. What happens there is a miracle of love.”

Spend some time with us and you’ll understand why we truly believe that, together, we can Save Them All.

Best Friends Animal Society

Best Friends is a nonprofit organization building no-kill programs and partnerships nationwide, all coordinated from our Kanab, Utah headquarters - the largest no-kill sanctuary for homeless companion animals.

At the core of our work is the dream that one day kindness will replace cruelty, and animals will no longer be destroyed because they are unwanted or imperfect. Spaying and neutering will be the rule for all pets and adoption from local animal shelters and rescues will be the first option for everyone. Those same shelters and rescues will have the knowledge and resources to help rehabilitate special-needs animals and find the right family for every animal.
