Do you know that most of the upstream tributaries of the mighty #RajangRiver in Sarawak are home to the indigenous fish species, #Semah and #Empurau? Sadly, there are not many rivers where these fishes can be found now due to disturbance from human activities.
These fishes need good #watershedmanagement and clean, flowing rivers for its survival. One of the effective ways to conserve these fishes is Tagang system, a community driven approach for managing fishing activities and conservation of fish in the wild.
The Tagang system segregates a stretch of river into zones which include a no-fishing zone and this allows fishes a chance to breed and eventually populate the river.
Matured fish can only be harvested at the specified zone and at a scheduled time. This system also increases the community’s sense of responsibility to ensure rivers are clean for fish to breed and grow.
Good #collaboration between the #localcommunity, #nonprofitorganisations, the #stategovernment and #public is very important to make the fish conservation more successful. Together possible!
