STEPS TO TAKE IF YOU HIT AN ANIMAL WHILE DRIVING

No sane person ever wants to hit an animal and endanger the lives of both the animal and road users. However, accidents do happen and drivers who panic often flee from the scene due to reasons such as not knowing what to do, especially if the animal appears dead.

Injuring animals by accident is unfortunate, but we always have a choice to check on them and to provide assistance.

These are steps to follow:

1. Stop your vehicle if safe to do so. Watch out for other vehicles that might put you or anyone else in danger. Make a U-turn to the location if necessary.

2. Stay at the scene and divert traffic if necessary, and if safe to do so.

3. Call these hotlines and wait for rescue to arrive:

- For domestic animals that are still alive, call SPCA at 6287 5355 ext. 9.

- For wildlife that are still alive, call ACRES at 9783 7782.

- If the animal is dead, call NEA at 6225 5632.

7. If you wish to approach the animal, be very careful. It will probably be in shock and might try to bite or scratch you in fear. If you are able to, you can take the animal to a veterinary clinic for treatment.

8. If you realise you have hit someone’s pet, you may want to see if you can locate its tag to access the contact details of its owner. Or ask or look around to locate the owner.

The Road Traffic Act states that drivers who hit a dog and fail to stop and render assistance can face a fine of up to S$3,000 or a jail term of up to a year.

But let’s work together to keep Singapore’s roads safer by rendering assistance to all animals (not just canines)!
