Why Are Malaysia’s Sea Turtles Disappearing?

 


“Marine turtles are vital for ocean ecosystems. Green turtles graze on seagrass beds, which in turn, increases the productivity of the seagrass ecosystem, while hawksbill turtles feed on marine sponges to help maintain the health of coral reefs.”



The leatherback turtle population in Malaysia has declined by more than 99 percent since the 1960s.

Turtle Conservation Society

The Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia was established in October 2011. The aim of the society is to bring about the recovery of depleted wild populations of turtles, with particular reference to freshwater turtles, in Malaysia through partnerships with like-minded organizations, individuals and local communities as well as through its own programs.
