Stiffer Laws In Amended Wildlife Act. Since The 19..

STIFFER LAWS IN AMENDED WILDLIFE ACT

Since the 1990s, the SPCA has been asking for the Wild Animals and Birds Act to be strengthened to better protect wildlife. We are thus delighted that the act has been finally amended.

The amendments in the Wildlife Act (formerly known as Wild Animals and Birds Act), were spearheaded by Louis Ng, MP for Nee Soon. The changes to the law will help to safeguard wild animals and the wider ecosystem and reduce human-wildlife conflict.

🚫 Feeding and releasing all wild animals anywhere in Singapore without approval is now illegal.

🚫 There are stronger measures to fight animal poaching.

🚫 Penalties for keeping, killing, taking, selling, importing and exporting wild animals without permits have been significantly increased.

✅ NParks is now authorised to direct organisations to take steps to protect wildlife, such as installing barriers to prevent animals from getting into road accidents.

The Wild Animals Legislation Review Committee, chaired by Louis, and with representatives from the SPCA and other organisations, had been working on the amendments since Feb 2018.
