Covid-19 Pet Joint Advisory - Sva Spca. There Have..

COVID-19 PET JOINT ADVISORY – SVA & SPCA

There have been reports about a study published in the journal Science on 8 April 2020. A team of researchers tried to infect various species of animals with the COVID-19 virus in a laboratory. They found that cats and ferrets can become infected with the virus. The research was being undertaken to see which animals are most susceptible and thus which ones scientists could use to create a vaccine or antiviral drug. There have also been a few reported cases of dogs, cats and tigers found infected with the novel coronavirus.

The findings are no cause for alarm. There is still no evidence that pets such as cats or dogs are a source of infection for humans, and the current mode of transmission remains human to human. Good hygiene practices and sensible precautions can help protect you and your beloved pets.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that if owners are sick, they should restrict and limit contact with pets and other animals, just like how they would with other people. Where possible, have another member of the household care for your animals while you are sick. If one must care for his/her pet or be around animals while one is sick, washing of hands before and after interaction with pets and wearing a facemask are recommended.

The animals in our midst are in fact at risk of picking up the infection from us. Dr Michael Ryan, Executive Director, World Health Organisation, Health Emergencies Programme said it best: “They’re beings in their own right and they deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. They are victims like the rest of us.”

We are closely monitoring scientific studies being published in relation to COVID-19 and pets, as well as the advice of health authorities. And we will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
