APPEALING FOR SAFER FOOD AND HIGHER ANIMAL WELFARE STANDARDS

Read the ST article (published today): https://bit.ly/livefoodspcaST titled ‘Coronavirus: No Violations At Singapore Wet Markets Selling Live Turtles, Frogs, Eels For Food’

The welfare issues surrounding live aquatic animals in food-related establishments is unfortunately not a new one. Over many years, the SPCA has received reports of these animals being kept in poor conditions. We have spoken up for them many times in the past and we will continue to do so.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Recently, ACRES launched an investigation into wet markets and the SPCA has seen the video footage. The findings were disturbing, especially in view of the current global health crisis.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There is an urgent need to review the current practices to protect human health and to safeguard the welfare of the animals involved.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

ACRES and SPCA have submitted an appeal to the authorities. Like Singapore did for poultry, we are asking for aquatic animals to be humanely and hygienically processed for food in well-regulated premises, and for an end to the display and sale of live animals in food establishments. This will result in safer food, protect public health, and improve the welfare of the animals involved.
