HAPPY TALES: NERF ADOPTED BY YVETTE & DOMINIK

We went to SPCA Singapore with the intention of adopting a hamster… however, the sight of Nirvana (now called Nerf) was too heart-wrenching to ignore. We were heartbroken when we saw him. He was really thin, had a wonky left ear, inflamed eyes, and was exhausted from street life. We adopted him in October 2013. We then relocated to the USA, and adopted his little brother Hankie from a local shelter. They’ve been best buddies ever since.

Although we love all animals, we have a soft spot for older animals who usually get overlooked during the adoption process. Nerf was really scared when we took him home and often hid under the bed. He wouldn’t dare to jump up the sofa or bed, partly due to his weak leg muscles. But as time passed, he grew more comfortable around the house.

We definitely grew more responsible, making sure that he gets regular vet visits, eating healthy and having constant activity. We love him like a child, and in a way he is a child — meowing at the top of his lungs at 3am, nibbling on our ankles when he wants a snack, and rolling over like a dog when he wants belly rubs, but we wouldn’t change a thing! When we work from home, he will join me at the table and type a couple of emails himself!

He’s a source of comfort when things get rough, always chilling by our side on the sofa, purring deeply. He fears no strangers and easily becomes the life of the party.
