ANIMAL PROTECTION INDEX: WHERE SHOULD SINGAPORE STAND?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

World Animal Protection, an international animal welfare organisation, have released their latest Animal Protection Index report.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“The Animal Protection Index (API) ranks 50 countries according to their animal welfare legislation and policy. Countries are assessed on 10 indicators, which cover various categories of animals (i.e. farm animals, animals in captivity, companion animals, animals used for draught and recreational purposes, animals used in scientific research, wild animals). Each country receives a letter grade ranging from A (the highest score) to G (the weakest score) for each indicator, as well as an overall grade.”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

No countries scored an outstanding ‘A’. And Singapore wasn’t on the list!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Did you know that the penalties for animal cruelty in Singapore have risen in the last two decades from a fine of up to $500 and/or imprisonment of up to 6 months, to a fine of up to $15,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 18 months for a first offence?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But there is still much to be done and animal protection takes ongoing effort. What changes do you hope to see in our animal protection laws, policies and landscape? How would you grade Singapore’s animal welfare legislation and policy? Let us know below.
