Rescuing Puppies From Unsheltered Areas

RESCUING street animals is a never-ending quest for animal shelters who are stretched to the max with new rescues.

Canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better’s (MDDB) latest challenge was rescuing dogs that had given birth to pups in unsheltered areas such as drains and open fields.

“Our recent rescue was a dog that had delivered in a drain.

“If we did not remove her from there, her newborn puppy would have been washed away if it rained,” said MDDB rescue coordinator Irene Low who said the rescue was carried out last Sunday.

According to her, another dog and her puppies had also been rescued a day earlier from the middle of a big field where it had delivered.

“This mother dog may not have been able to find a suitable place before her puppies arrived,” said Low.

She said prior to that, MDDB had rescued four other dogs with their puppies.

She added that her main concern was whether they would be able to rehome all the puppies.

“We have many black puppies in the litter and from our experience, it is difficult to find homes for them,” said Low.

To cope with the cost of maintaining the almost 200 rescued dogs in its care, MDDB has a special sponsorship programme where well-wishers can contribute towards their keep.

Under the sponsorship programme, well-wishers can contribute RM60 for able-bodied and RM100 for special needs dogs monthly for their expenses.

Each person can sponsor as many dogs as they want and payments can be made monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or annually.

“These funds will go towards rental, utilities, food and other necessities,” said Low.

MDDB will be having its sponsorship programme tomorrow at The Square Jaya One, Petaling Jaya from 11am to 6pm.

“We will bring some of our special needs dogs as well as able-bodied ones to the event,” said Low.

She hopes that people will sign up for the sponsorship programme.
