KLANG: Rankled by how three pet dogs were being abused by a resident of a gated community in East Ledang, Iskandar Puteri Johor Bharu, several people living in the neighbourhood decided to act.

They confronted the man and told him they would no longer tolerate how badly he treated his two Golden Retrievers and a Siberian husky.

The dogs were confined in small cages and allegedly deprived of food and water for at least 12 hours daily, said Sharina Ali, one of four women who confronted the man.

Instead of being remorseful, the man hurled insults, pulled his shorts down and flashed his posterior.“The dogs came a few weeks back and were placed in compact cages. The Siberian husky was in a cat cage, ” said Sharina.

She added that the cages were placed at a narrow space in front of the lawn. The narrow space was adjacent to a walking path which other residents used to go to places in the housing area, like the park.

“People were seeing the pitiful plight of the dogs daily and the residents agreed that we should speak to the man about it, ” said Sharina.

They had first gone to the house but were unable to see him.

Acting on advice from their housing estate’s management committee, Sharina and her three neighbours lodged a report at the Anjung police station the following day before going to the house, accompanied by a policeman.

“The man said he had confined the dogs because the Siberian husky had a skin condition and he did not want his pregnant wife to get infected by it, ” said Sharina.

Soon after, the man told them off loudly, pulled his shorts down and flashed them, Sharina claimed.

The women then lodged a second report against him.

Sharina said she was very worried about the welfare of the dogs as the man had moved them to an unknown location.

In ISKANDAR PUTERI, Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm Dzulkhairi Mukhtar confirmed the arrest of the 22-year-old man for criminal intimidation.

“The investigation is ongoing, ” he said.

He added that the three dogs have been referred to the Veterinary Services Department for necessary action.
