The 2020 Global Health Crisis Has Certainly Height..

The 2020 global health crisis has certainly heightened many animal welfare issues. Despite the knock-on effects, Soi Dog Foundation continues to advocate for the wellbeing of stray dogs and cats in Thailand through dialogue and collaboration with the government. Thanks to your support, we have reached many milestones this year, particularly in the advancement of the status of animals in general.

As part of our holistic approach, Soi Dog consults on a number of animal welfare issues across the country in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Development (DLD). This includes disseminating our expertise to local shelters about best practice for adoption, sterilisation and vaccination, behavioural assessment and shelter management.

In February, for example, Soi Dog visited a shelter in Hat Yai, a province in the south of Thailand, with representatives from the local municipality. The purpose of the visit was to devise a plan of action for managing the stray dog and cat populations there through a programme of CNVR (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return), which both the municipality and the DLD were on board with.

In March, we joined forces with the Public Health and Environment Division of a local municipality in Phuket to set up an animal care training day. Members of the community – from public health volunteers to local students – came together to hear our Humane Education Team discuss animal-handling tips, the importance of animal welfare and the prevention of rabies.

In September, Soi Dog met with the Head of the Animal Welfare Protection Division of the DLD to discuss the development and management of Thailand’s animal shelters. Representatives from animal quarantine centres in Buriram and Nakhon Phanom and other relevant organisations also attended.

🎉 One of the highlights of the year was Soi Dog’s Bangkok Director of Animal Welfare Dr. Tuntikorn Rungpatana (Dr. Oob) appointment to Thailand’s Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Committee last month. Dr. Oob will be involved in revising the country’s Animal Welfare Act as well as proposing new policies – thereby building a brighter future for stray animals across Thailand.
