This year did not start on the right note—even way back in January—for the river terrapins.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There was conflict between the local egg collectors and drug addicts on the nesting banks, and our Terrapin Guardians had difficulty sneaking terrapin eggs out of the nesting bank. In the process, many of the eggs may have been handled roughly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We had also lodged a report with Perhilitan Kemaman, and they came down to the nesting banks for a spot-check, hoping to reprimand some of the trouble makers, but due to a tip-off, the trouble makers, you guessed it, did not turn up.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Also worth noting here is that, despite our presence in the local village for almost a decade, terrapin eggs aren’t being surrendered to us easily. We have to negotiate with the local villagers who think it’s their birthright to collect and consume the eggs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Dylan and the Terrapin Guardians work very hard to secure each egg, and it is often times a dangerous job, now that drug addicts are part of the equation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We are not happy with the low hatching success this year, but nevertheless, we are grateful for the 220 hatchlings that have successfully hatched. That being said, measures will be taken to ensure better hatch rates in the future.
