Have you thought about the importance of water for wildlife and why wildlife needs water? Water is essential to all living beings, including wildlife. All wildlife (i.e. wild animals and plants) need water to survive and water sources are important to enable them to thrive.

Animals depend on water for drinking as part of their diet and to fulfil vital functions such as reproduction, temperature regulation, nutrient uptake and transportation. Plants also rely on water to grow and stay alive. Water is one of the essential components required for the chemical reactions via photosynthesis to take place in plants in order to produce food for the plants to survive.

Furthermore, water bodies serve as habitats that provide shelter for wildlife where fauna and flora live, breed and thrive. Such habitats include rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands. As an example, let’s look at Setiu Wetlands, Terengganu where WWF-Malaysia is actively pursuing conservation efforts jointly with various government and corporate partners as well as local communities. The species diversity recorded to date in Setiu Wetlands is outstanding: 61 mammal species, 59 herpetofauna species, 230 insect species, 216 bird species, 117 fish species.
