Here's To Those Dogs Who Are Not The First To Catc..

Here’s to those dogs who are not the first to catch your eye nor jump up and down greeting you enthusiastically, when you first see them at a shelter.

We are dedicating the month of May to our shy dogs. Some who are naturally shy, some cautious due to incidents from their past and some who are just sensitive and gentle souls. https://links.soidog.org/meet-a-few-special-dogs

They may all have their reasons, but they do have one thing in common. They find the world a scary place especially a hectic place like the shelter.

The way to overcome this shyness and build confidence is by leaving the shelter and settling in a calm and stable environment.

Unfortunately, due to their introverted and timid nature, these are the dogs who also find it difficult to find homes and have to live at the shelter, for far longer than they should.

While adopting a shy dog is not for everyone, our immense gratitude goes out to those adopters who who did take a chance and have gone and above and beyond to provide a home to these wonderful dogs, who are lost in the crowd.

As part of our #furrytailending stories, this week, we are so excited to share an update from Sabaijungfour (now Aly)’s adopters from Canada. Sabaijungfour and his siblings were extremely nervous dogs who need coaxing and encouragement when in unfamiliar environments.

‘She’s an amazing dog – she mystically was 100% housetrained from day one? She is very smart (sometimes too smart – she can carefully extract medication from anything that it is put in) and has been learning things to keep her safe (like waiting before going through doors and crossing roads) and handle routines (like putting on warm clothes and getting onto and off of things). She’s been getting a lot better with her fear of people (she loves my partner and now will also carefully take treats from strangers if I tell her it’s okay) and her wariness of strange dogs (has started to play bow and run around with some neighbourhood pups when we run into them in the park). She’s weirdly a total diva and will turn her nose up at food that isn’t exactly to her liking. She loves the snow and the wildlife of Canada. She’s still not a huge fan of car rides but loves the parks that we end up at. She has several beds all over my place and blankets/pillows that are all her own. She’s definitely not a morning dog – she happily hops back into bed as I’m putting on my shoes for work and naps all day (all the better to hit the park in the afternoon!). She’s very lovely and polite and just the most wonderful buddy.’

Psst – Yes, it is a big commitment when you decide to adopt a shy and sensitive dog, but if you are looking to truly help a street dog and also be rewarded with immense love and loyalty, then the journey is worth it.
