PERHILITAN MURDERS ENDANGERED DUSKY LEAF MONKEYS

Port Dickson, 19 May 2021 – A family of about 20 endangered dusky leaf monkeys, including

mothers and infants, were massacred by The Wildlife and National Parks Department

(Perhilitan) personnel in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. According to the International Union

for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the dusky leaf monkey

(trachypithecus obscurus) is categorised as endangered, with a decreasing population trend.

It is understood that only two of the dusky leaf monkeys, also known as lotong chengkong,

from the same family survived the shooting. The incident was heard by nearby residents, who

had witnessed Perhilitan stuffing the dead bodies of the dusky leaf monkeys in sacks.

An eyewitness has also reportedly seen the corpse of dusky leaf monkey left stuck on a tree

whilst another severely injured dusky leaf monkey was heard screeching and retreating back

into the woods, leaving behind traces of fresh blood. Empty shotgun shells were found at the

scene.

Supposedly, Perhilitan had acted on a public complaint of aggressive monkeys in the area but

residents rubbished this, saying the dusky leaf monkeys are a shy species afraid to even

approach humans and have been living there in peace for years.

Nurul Azreen Sultan who had heard the gunshots and saw Perhilitan at the scene, said she

has lodged a police report following the incident, and wants action be taken against Perhilitan

for the killing of the langurs. Lawyers for Animal Rights have also been informed that many

other police reports have ben lodged by concerned citizens all over Malaysia.

How can an endangered species be shot en masse? How can Perhilitan who is tasked with

protecting wild animals shoot and kill approximately 20 endangered animals?

Perhilitan is tasked with protecting wild animals under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

Lawyers for Animal Rights demands that the Perhilitan and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM)

act in concert immediately to investigate this incident under the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

Lawyers for Animal Rights is hereby putting Perhilitan on notice that your wanton actions will

not be left unchecked. We demand that Perhilitan investigate and prosecute every single

officer who is complicit in this bloody and barbaric murder of poor defenceless creatures.

Failure to do so will result in immediate legal action.
