Do Turtles Breathe Underwater?. Turtles Are Catego..

Do turtles breathe underwater?

Turtles are categorized as reptiles, which means they miss a particular organ called gills in the fish, which helps them to breathe underwater.

Instead, the turtles have lungs and breathe air, just like human beings. Turtles cannot breathe underwater, but they can hold their deep breath for several hours depending on their level of activity such as finding food and sleeping.

While turtle holding their breath, their heart rate slows significantly to conserve oxygen—up to nine minutes can pass between heartbeats. Because of this, turtles can stay underwater for an extended period when not stressed

Different species of turtles have different capacities to hold their breath, depending on locality and the temperature. Some freshwater turtles also can remain underwater for several days except during hibernation, when they can remain underwater for several months!
