Turtles (yes, including sea turtles, freshwater turtles and terrestrial tortoises) are shielded from predators by an outer shell.

The top shell is called the “carapace,” and underneath the carapace is the bone structure. Just like our bones, it is made up of living cells. So, as the grow, the shell will also grow along with the turtle’s body size.
