PENDING ROAD WILD BOAR

Since February 2022, our wildlife management team has received many calls on sightings of a wild boar at the void deck at Pending road, rummaging through food waste left OUTSIDE the bins.

Working together with the @hollandbukitpanjangtowncouncil Holland Bukit Panjang Town Council, signs were put up next to the bins. A follow up site visit revealed that rubbish was still left outside the bins.

In March 2022, our wildlife management team together with the town council did a door-to-door engagement at the hotspot block to appeal to residents on the sightings and waste management. The very understanding residents at the block also shared that most residents use the chutes, whereas passersby from the train stations may use the void deck bins.

Situated very close to the Zheng Hua nature park which was in the news (https://tinyurl.com/4km2cjte) recently on wild boar sightings, we are very concerned on any potential conflict situations, when this calm young pig grows up to an adult and continues to come to the void decks – this can be mitigated only if the food sources are removed 100% from the void decks, and that requires behaviour change from the users!

Our concerns also arise from a very similar situation in Choa Chu Kang Way since 2020, when some residents were feeding a young wild boar at nights at the void deck area, who started venturing deeper into the estate only to be captured and put down in the end due to ‘public safety’ concerns.

Is it too much to ask – to ensure proper food waste disposal, so the wild animals do not pay the price in the end?
