On Saturday, August 11, in a small coastal village of Belawai in Sarawak, WWF-Malaysia together with the Forest Department Sarawak, Inland Fisheries Division of the Agriculture Department, Sarawak Forestry Corporation and Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak held a half-day awareness programme for local communities from Rajang-Belawai-Paloh areas.
The programme focused on highlighting the importance of mangrove forests and its biodiversity; conservation of Irrawaddy dolphins and salt water crocodiles; and awareness on the Wildlife Protection Ordinance.
This programme is funded by Nagao Wetlands Fund, RAMSAR. Belawai is located within the Rajang delta, a project site under WWF-Malaysia, which is home to one of the last two large complexes of mangrove systems in Sarawak.
Among others, the delta is an Important Bird Area, breeding and nursery sites for Chinese herring (Batang Lassa) and High Conservation Value Area for dolphins.
