From Training to Action: Graduates Ready to Advance Palm Oil and Forestry Sustainability
On 31 July 2025, WWF-Malaysia and Control Union Malaysia marked a milestone with the graduation of the Intensive Training Programme under the Asia Sustainable Palm Oil Links 1.0 initiative. This programme was designed through collaboration between WWF-Malaysia and Control Union, with a shared vision to enhance the quality of sustainability assessors within the palm oil and forestry sectors.
Launched in October 2024, the programme featured a comprehensive 10-day intensive training course held from 17–28 February 2025, followed by three to four months of internship placements between March and June. The pilot batch of 15 trainees invested 66 hours in classroom sessions, covering case studies, field visits, group work, and guest lectures, culminating in examinations.
Dr. Jason Hon, Associate Director, Peninsular Malaysia and Conservation Science at WWF-Malaysia, delivered the closing speech, celebrating the efforts of the participants and the strong partnership with Control Union. He was joined by Mr. Chathuranga Desphapriya, General Manager, Certifications Lead–Forestry Centre of Excellence Asia Pacific of Control Union, together with trainers, mentors, and representatives from Forest Solutions, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad, Wild Asia, Weng Meng Industries, and SamLing Timber. Also present were Universiti Teknologi MARA (Jasin, Malacca), Malaysian Timber Certification Council, APP Timber, Malaysian Forest Fund, and PERHILITAN.
In his remarks, Dr. Jason said: “Sustainability is not just about producing responsibly. It is about creating harmony between people, planet, and profit.”
🤝 WWF-Malaysia extends sincere appreciation to all partners, trainers, and collaborators who made the programme a success. The graduates now carry the responsibility to raise standards so forests remain standing, biodiversity is protected, and communities thrive.
Together possible.
