Big Step Forward For Sea Turtles In Sabah. A Power..

Big step forward for sea turtles in Sabah 🐢✨
A powerful new collaboration has just been sealed – bringing together Sabah Wildlife Department, WWF-Malaysia, and Mataking Reef Resort to pilot cutting-edge solutions for marine turtle conservation in Semporna, Sabah.
Through combining science and action, this partnership will:
🧬 Adopt ShellBank, by using DNA to detect populations and trace sea turtles, dead or alive, back to their population of origin — strengthening conservation management and law enforcement
📡 Satellite track and map turtles’ journey — supporting research to better identify and conserve critical habitats of sea turtles
Together, these efforts contribute to Blue Corridors for Turtles – helping to connect nesting beaches, migratory routes, and foraging grounds for a clearer picture of genetically distinct turtle connectivity across the region.
Because every sea turtle matters — and soon, we can track and trace their journeys and fight harder to keep them safe. 🌊🐢
This project is in partnership with Marine Research Foundation and Universiti Malaysia Sabah. WWF-Malaysia also acknowledges the support of Albizia & Friends, whose contribution enabled the implementation of the Turtle DNA and Satellite Tracking Project in Semporna.
