What Actually Happens To Animals Brought In By The Councils

Over in Kuching, the SSPCA has a special relationship with the 3 town councils, MBKS (Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan), DBKU (Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara) and MPP (Majlis Perbandaran Padawan). Animals brought in by them are automatically transferred to the care of the SSPCA and becomes our property which saves them from CERTAIN death after 48 hours as is stated under MBKS' by-law of 1990, Section 5, The City of Kuching South (Dog License). For the other two councils, the animals are brought in for immediate termination.

Many owners who wish to abandon their pets or those who call in the councils to remove harmless stray animals refuse to accept the reality that the chances of adoption for these animals hover very close to zero since what most visitors want are HEALTHY and CUTE puppies and kittens with very few coming to look for adult animals.

We try to hold the animals for as long as is possible but the sad and shocking truth is that almost NO animal, whether young or old, has died in the shelter of old age. The majority were euthanized or more appropriately killed because to prevent the new animals from being killed upon capture or after 48 hours, we have to ensure that we are always ready to accept new captures to give them the extension which they need and deserve BUT the shelter was designed to only hold 200 animals comfortably although our actual figures usually number in the low 300s because we try very hard not to kill anything unless it's absolutely necessary.

Increasing the size and capacity of the shelter will NOT serve any purpose in educating the public on being tolerant of harmless animals or pet owners on taking better care and responsibility towards their pets. Instead, with a bigger shelter, it'll only give irresponsible owners the excuse that THEIR pets will be well taken care of by US because THEY have no time.

The Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals believes that animals, as living creatures, have value beyond economic measurement, and are entitled to legal, moral and ethical consideration and protection. The Sarawak SPCA's mission is to act as an advocate on behalf of animals and as an enforcer of their rights; to provide for the well-being of the animals of the State of Sarawak who are abandoned, injured, subjected to unfair or cruel treatment, or otherwise in need; to cultivate in the people of our community an awareness of the animals whose world we share; to promote a bond of mutual assistance between people and animals; and to instill respect for and appreciation of all living things.
