Our Soft-Shelled Turtle Tank Is Up At Last!

This photo album is dedicated to Mdm Eileen Lim who graciously sponsored this project and all volunteers who came together last Saturday,20th December to make a huge difference for our animals. Their hard work has led to the completion of the Soft-shelled turtle pond. Soft-shelled turtles are known to be aggressive and for this reason, we had been housing them individually in smaller tanks. We wanted to house them together in an outdoor pond. To successfully do this, the pond has to be large enough in order for them to have ample space for them to roam around. The large space will also decrease the chances of them fighting. We initially wanted to do a concrete pond but due to several constraints, we decided to use large 3m by 1.5m fiberglass tanks. In our initial design, we also wanted to have a basking area where the turtles can climb out of the tank and bask on a sandy embankment. We revised our design and instead put the basking platform in the water itself. Today the first two of our Soft-shelled turtles were put in the outdoor ponds. We will bring out the rest throughout the last week of 2014.Prior to setting up these tanks, we have been testing the compatibility of the turtles by putting them in groups of 3 in a smaller tank to see how they react to each other. Though this test is not conclusive in terms of how they will react to each other in the future, It was a good start when they seemed to ignore each other and not immediately fight. This large pond will also provide us with more options with the variety of enrichment’s that we can give them. We will update on the progress as we bring out the rest of our turtles in this pond and we will post a video in weeks to come!
