Weekly Education Tip: Let your cats scratch!

The SPCA is against the declawing of cats, viewing it as unnecessary and inhumane. Scratching is perfectly natural and normal feline behaviour which helps a cat condition and sharpen its claws, as well as sheds the older layers of nails, keeping the claws clean and smooth. It would be practical and necessary to provide your cat with a few scratching posts in your household (which are also generally not too costly).

A scratching post is not a mere toy. It is an essential necessity for every cat. Cats need to scratch to keep their claws in shape. This arrangement also encourages your cat to scratch appropriately at the scratching post instead of your furniture. If your cat still scratches your furniture, you can help to deter such behaviour with some relevant tips from http://www.wikihow.com/Stop-a-Cat-from-Clawing-Furniture

And your scratching posts should be up to scratch, too! Replace worn posts with new, functional ones.
