The Bornean orang-utan was once distributed throughout large areas of Kalimantan (Indonesia) and Sarawak and Sabah (Malaysia) on the island of Borneo. But both numbers and distribution have declined rapidly since the middle of the 20th century as large swathes of the orang-utans forest home have been logged or cleared for palm oil plantations and other agriculture.
WWFs strategy to save Borneos orang-utans forms part of our overall work in the Heart of Borneo, and builds on more than 40 years of conservation efforts on the island.
