SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT MANAGING BIRDS WHO VISIT EATERIES

The Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) has been receiving feedback on mishandling of birds who enter outdoor and semi-outdoor eating places, mostly coffee shops. Often times we realise that shop owners struggle to find long term solutions to have the issue resolved. This may lead to behaviours where owners tend to use methods such as catapulting the birds. We would like to emphasize that this is an act of animal cruelty and enforcement action could be taken by the relevant authorities when caught/reported.

Hence we urge the shop owners to take up the following measures to mitigate bird issues:.

1. To ensure cleanliness of the place by clearing food scraps and leftovers immediately. Consumers can also play a role by doing their part and clearing their own trays.

2. Keep food waste covered and contained to prevent access to the birds.

3. You may wish to enquire private bird control companies for professional advice on this matter and humane solutions (such as deterrents and bird exclusion devices).

4. You may choose to call AVA Animal Response Centre at 1800 476 1600 or NEA Contact Centre Hotline at 1800-2255 632 for further advice.

Be vigilant and report cases of animal cruelty to the ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) at acrescrime@gmail.com.

A little help and understanding goes a long way for the animals who share our urban spaces.
