HELP END THE ILLEGAL AND CRUEL RELEASE OF RED-EARED SLIDERS

In the past week alone, we have unfortunately been alerted to several red eared-sliders who have been cruelly released/abandoned in Singapore. Please help to spread the word that the release of these animals is not only illegal, but can also cause a lot of suffering to the animals, not to mention having a negative impact on Singapore’s wildlife.

Red-eared sliders or terrapins are one of the most widely traded turtles for the pet trade, and can legally be sold/kept as pets in Singapore. These exotic turtles are imported into Singapore in large numbers to meet the demand for the pet trade. They are sold in pet shops and aquariums in for just a few dollars, meaning that anyone is able to purchase one as a pet.

Sadly, many people who buy a red-eared slider as a pet are unaware of their long lifespan and their various complex needs – in terms of space, food, water quality, sunlight and privacy. Our Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) receives many reports about these animals being kept in sub-optimal conditions.

Our wildlife rescue team also comes across many cases of red-eared sliders who have been run over by vehicles or attacked by other animals, as a result of being abandoned or released.

Please remember that it is illegal to release red-eared sliders in Singapore. It is also cruel to release an animal into an unfamiliar environment. These animals are also known to compete for food and space with Singapore’s native turtle species such as the Malayan box turtle, thereby threatening the existence of our native turtles.

ACRES strongly urges members of public not to buy any wild animals as pets, and would like to highlight the plight of these red-eared sliders: even though they are allowed to be kept as pets here in Singapore, many red-eared sliders suffer silently due to sub-optimal living conditions and care, as well as being victims of abandonment and release into the wild.
