Free Flights for Rescue Dogs with Virgin Australia
Virgin Australia is positioning itself as the pet friendly airline, with an offer to fly rescue dogs across the country to new owners for free.
The partnership with Jetpets, will see Virgin work with animal welfare groups like PetRescue help connect surrendered or abandoned dogs with new owners interstate opening up a lot more options for the animals.
Rough Collie Lallee was the first to benefit, flying from Melbourne to Sydney this week to join new owner Raymond Willmott. Founding director of PetRescue, Vicky Davy said the free travel offer would literally save the lives of thousands of pets.
We often have pets who cant find homes in their own area, and being able to transport them to a new area will save their life, said Ms Davy.
It opens up the whole country to find new homes and give the pets a second chance.
She said every month PetRescue rehomed an average 4000 dogs and 4000 cats through its 95 member groups including the RSPCA.
We rehomed 89,000 pets in total last year but the number that need new homes is more like 200,000, Ms Davy said.
The option of transporting pets across the country will go a long way to achieving that number.
Virgin Australia Cargo Chief Executive Merren McArthur said they were delighted to be helping Jetpets and rescue organisations to overcome distance and travel barriers so pets could be matched with loving homes.
This is a treasured partnership for all of us at Virgin Australia Cargo, said Ms McArthur. Everyone in the team is passionate about pet welfare and helping to make a positive difference not just for our furry, four-legged friends but for the new owners that receive them.
Mr Willmott and his partner will provide Lallees third home after previous owners were unable to continue caring for her due to either age, poor health or financial hardship.
King Charles Cavalier Spaniel Danny also benefited from the new partnership being flown from Far North Queensland to the Gold Coast, for a stint with a foster carer while a new home is sourced.
Jetpets General Manager, Belinda Gallpen said the company was delighted to play a part in transporting and flying homeless pets to their fur-ever homes or foster home arrangements.
It just allows so many more doors to be opened, increasing the chances of pets finding loving adopter and foster homes, said Ms Gallpen.
Bravo to the compassionate Virgin Australia! Shoutout to AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines & Firefly Airlines wouldn’t it be so furrily awesome if we can make this happen in Malaysia?
