Programme aims to instil animal welfare awareness – Borneo Post
KUCHING: The children of Taska Angel here had the chance to learn about animal welfare yesterday through the ‘Kids for Animals’ programme jointly organised between the playschool, Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) and Little Monsters Pet Station.
The programme is supported by the Local Government and Housing Ministry’s Public Health Section.
According to SSPCA chairperson Rebecca D’Cruz, they are working together with the state government to run activities to educate the younger generation about animal welfare.
“The idea is (that) we bring animals to the places where children are and give them advice on how to deal with an animal. (For example) when you’re walking along the road and if a dog starts chasing you, what do you do?
“So, we believe that there is a lot of information that needs to be transmitted, but we are trying to do it in a systematic way because children cannot absorb everything at the same time.
“By coming (here) and doing activities like this, we reinforce the message that we have been giving out to the kids and we’re very glad that the state government is supporting us,” said D’Cruz when met at Taska Angel yesterday.
In noting that animal welfare is something that everybody needs to know, she said SSPCA realised through the years that it was very difficult to change the behaviour of older people, but easier to impart the right animal welfare values to the younger generation.
“That is why we are here and we plan to do this across Kuching as a start, and hopefully we will be able to work with the Education Ministry to roll it out across the whole state.”
Meanwhile, Taska Angel principal Katerina Kolushkina said this was the second year the playschool held the programme.
“This year, we involved SSPCA due to the recent outbreak of rabies where a lot of animals were dumped and treated badly.
“This gave me to the idea that besides the mini zoo, I should bring in an awareness talk on how to prevent cruelty to animals and how to take care of animals.”
Kolushkina believed that children must be educated on prevention of cruelty to animals so that they can help spread the message to adults.
“This school focuses a lot of sensory play, meaning all the activities are hands-on. I hope the kids will benefit (from this activity) and remember the experience.
“This is the main idea, just a way to raise their awareness on how to take care of animals and how to be gentle, what can and cannot be done.”
