Happy World Wetlands Day 2018! Can you name some of the wetlands in Malaysia?

As the demand for land increases, there is a tendency to encroach wetlands and convert them into dumping grounds, filling them up in order to build infrastructure on them, draining or burning them to turn them into plantations and many more.

Amongst its other functions, our wetlands protect us from the effects of climate change so we need to retain, restore and preserve them for a sustainable future.

WWF-Malaysia has been working to advocate Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu (pictured here) to be a protected area as it is home to Malaysia’s largest breeding population of the critically endangered painted terrapin, a freshwater turtle species. Find out more about WWF-Malaysia’s Freshwater work on our YouTube channel link in bio.
