#throwback Have you heard recently the city of Melaka was awarded as the national winner of WWF’s One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) for Malaysia? The aim of the challenge is to increase climate efforts from cities to deliver on the Paris Agreement.
Melaka continues to explore new ways to improve its goals in sustainability. By 2030, the state aims to cut carbon emissions by 45% through many of its bold initiatives. The city has also been adding electric vehicles to its municipal fleet and installing charging stations throughout the city.
“There are no limits to the challenges we face in combating climate change and preserving the world’s natural systems and resources. WWF-Malaysia is proud of cities that took part in this international challenge putting our country in the world map,” said Dr. Henry Chan, Conservation Director of WWF Malaysia.
Melaka took its rightful place as a national winner among fellow national city winners such as Santiago (Chile), Karachi (Pakistan), Cleveland (United States) , Vancouver (Canada) and Rajkot (India). The Swedish City of Uppsala was named the global winner of WWF’s 2018 OPCC.
Aside from Melaka, two other Malaysian cities came in as runners up and national finalists which are Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam respectively. WWF-Malaysia welcomes the continued participation of Malaysian cities in this competition. Interested city participants may reach out to us for more details.
