The Malaysian Pied Fantail is part of a group of birds that tend to move about while stretching out their tail feathers, resembling a Chinese fan. It was beautiful to observe its nesting habits just outside the kitchen window of my home in Petaling Jaya.

The nest is an elegantly constructed cup, and the parents are extremely protective of the nest, attacking tree-shrews, cats, crows and even humans that approach too near. They feed mainly on insects and can be found in habitats such as mangroves and lowland rainforests.
