Puppy Develops Dangerously Swollen Belly After Accident

Poor Naomi was brought to the clinic by her carer, unable to walk after being hit by car. Aside from being unable to walk, the only injury that could be seen on Naomi’s body was two small wounds on her back from the accident. It was determined that Naomi had a fractured pelvis, which is treatable by rest and painkillers.

After spending 5 days in the clinic resting, vets noticed that Naomi’s belly had started to swell. It was initially thought that Naomi may be suffering from a hernia, however upon further investigation it was determined that the swelling of her stomach is a result of the previous trauma. The tissue under the small wounds on her back had become infected, resulting in her belly becoming full of fluid. Poor Naomi has now had to have her body shaved and drains inserted to drain the dangerous excess fluid.

Naomi is far from being out of the woods just yet. She is currently resting and on pain relief will require rehabilitation to ensure she can walk again. The vets are monitoring her closely to ensure her infection is controlled and the fluid does not return to her abdomen.
