Petal, A Dog Meat Trade Survivor Found Her Happy Ever After!

At the height of Thailand’s dog meat trade, an estimated 500,000 Thai dogs were being illegally transported to Vietnam every year for sale. Petal was rescued in 2013 when a group of trucks transporting dogs was intercepted in a Soi Dog-led operation in Buriram province, northeastern Thailand.

It was because of Soi Dog supporters that we were able to raise funds to build an emergency shelter where Petal and thousands more dogs like her were temporary housed. Groups of dogs were regularly transported to our main shelter in Phuket, and Petal was one such rescue that made the journey in 2016. Thankfully, the dog meat trade is now non-existent in Thailand, and the outlawing of the consumption of dog and cat meat is included in the Prevention of Cruelty and Animal Welfare Provision Act 2014, an act that Soi Dog worked with the Thai government to draft.

But we will never forget Petal’s incredible journey from a dog meat trade survivor in Thailand to her #furrytailending in Canada. It’s a constant source of inspiration and motivation. Here is Petal’s soul-fuelling story as told by her forever family:

“When Petal first arrived at my apartment, the Save Our Scruff representative and I carried her crate in, the first thing she did when she was let out of the crate was pee on the floor (after an incredibly long trip!), but the very next thing she did was walk over to us slowly wagging her tail. Right off the bat she seemed to like people, but was very skittish and sensitive to any unexpected noises or movements. I remember the Save Our Scruff representative said she was surprised Petal was so friendly right away as some dogs are so scared when they first arrive that they will not leave their crates for hours.

She is so quiet. I rarely hear her move around. I’ll just look over and she is suddenly in the same room as me, and I have no idea how long she’s been there. I’ve maybe heard her bark less than 10 times in the almost four years that I’ve had her. She will sing a little song for me when I come home from work. The first time I heard her do this was a couple months after I adopted her, and it shocked me since I rarely ever hear a peep out of her. She is a pretty serious gal, and wasn’t really into cuddling when she first arrived. I would sit down beside her and she would get up and move at least a metre away from me. She’s come so far since then, and now she’ll hop up on the couch for a snuggle every day.”
