Rice Is Consumed At Almost Every Meal, Even Today...

Rice is consumed at almost every meal, even today. It is without a doubt a staple food among Asians. Feeding Asia with rice definitely needs to be sustainable. If not, we will run out of land and rice to eat pretty quickly. And what happens then? Nature is spoiled and human well-being is affected. 🌾🍚
Our team in Sarawak has been working on sustainable rice farming in the highlands of Ba’ Kelalan for a number of years now. Recently, a cross-learning trip for farmers was held where nine farmers from Ba’ Kelalan went to SRI Lovely Farm, Kedah, to learn about the pesticide-free planting method, System of Rice Intensification (SRI), from Captain (Rtd) Zakaria Kamantasha. Zakaria is a pioneer of SRI in Malaysia and SRI trainer in ASEAN region.
The cross-learning visit took place in May; and the aim was to build up the farmers’ knowledge on SRI so that they can become local champions and future trainers in their respective villages.
WWF-Malaysia started its journey on SRI with farmers in Ba’ Kelalan in 2017. It started with 12 farmers testing the waters to pilot the sustainable rice project. Today there are about 50 farmers adopting SRI and counting. This sustainable rice farming project is supported by CIMB Islamic Bank and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. WWF-Malaysia works in Ba’ Kelalan, a priority conservation area, as it sits in the Heart of Borneo.
