Updates On 4th May 2012

On April 26th around 7:30am, Nad, of the Hindhede group of long-tailed macaques was struck by an automobile and immediately perished. Although such accidents do happen regularly, Nad, is worthy of a pause of remembrance as she was the top-ranking female of these macaques, and thus played the most integral
role in their community. Every other female in the group deferred to her, and she was a focal point of social contact. Since females form the core of macaque communities, she was the most influential of the Hindhede macaques. Her loss will not go without affect to the social world of those that have survived her.

Although her passing will go unnoticed to most, Nad, along with the rest of these macaques, are well known and have been followed and studied since 2007. We have known Nad for almost 5 years, and she, and her fellow community members, have been involved in several research projects with Nanyang Technological University, University of Notre Dame, National Geographic, and Nparks. These are the most well studied macaques in Singapore, and have been the focus of some high profile projects. Nad will be missed by the few of us that have had the fortunate experience of documenting her life, and those of her friends and family.
