SHARED CHARACTERISTICS OF NON-HUMAN ANIMALS AND HUMANS An interesting feature highlighting some examples of how animals are not so different from humans. From laughing rats to mourning elephants and compassionate capuchins. “The more we draw the connections between how other creatures who share the planet with us experience the world, the more compassionate we can be towards them.” http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsand nature/animals-demonstrate-they-are-more-like-us/ #AmazingAnima...

KOPI LUWAK: A CUP OF CRUELTY Did you know that civets are cruelly exploited in the production of what is known to be the most expensive coffee in the world? Kopi Luwak (civet coffee) is derived from undigested coffee beans passed out by civets. Civets used to produce these beans are fed mostly coffee cherries, and their faeces then go through a cleaning, drying, roasting and grounding process before it is ready for sale. This coffee type has been labelled most expensive due to its unique proc...

BACK TO WORK FOR THE RUN, CLIMB, SWIM TEAM! After several painful baths (from the sunburn!) and occasional random naps, our full ACRES team is back at work this week, planning and preparing for the next fundraiser, because we constantly need funds to keep going with our efforts to end animal cruelty. Currently, for ACRES to keep our advocacy and wildlife rescue projects running at full speed, we need at least S$60,000 a month. The vast majority of our funding comes from people like you, our d...

Grieving Dolphin Seen Carrying The Body Of Her Dead Calf
5th Aug 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

A DOLPHIN’S GRIEF Here’s some evidence which suggests that certain emotional experiences of dolphins are perhaps not so unlike our own. Researchers from the conservation group Oceanomare Delphis recently made a heartbreaking discovery off the coast of Italy. They encountered a bottlenose dolphin supporting the body of her deceased calf, apparently unwilling to leave it behind even after death. This apparent grieving behaviour has been observed in dolphins on other occasions, with dolphin...

OUR OUTDOOR KITCHEN IS REPAIRED! When we established the Outdoor Sanctuary Area back in 2013, we needed to construct a small area in which volunteers and staff could prepare the daily food for the rescued tortoises. We managed to construct this small outdoor kitchen by recycling some wooden pallets! This humble corner lasted for about two years before it started giving way this year, as the wood was not intended for outdoor use. Luckily, a kind donor passed us some old outdoor decking wood she...

How Cecil The Lion And Tilikum The Orca Changed The World
4th Aug 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

HOW CECIL THE LION AND TILIKUM THE ORCA ARE HELPING TO EXPOSE AND END ANIMAL CRUELTY Here's an interesting feature on how the stories of individual animals, coupled with the use of social media, have opened the eyes of people all over the world to animal exploitation. “Cecil the lion and Tilikum the orca are two very different animals who wanted something very similar — to be free and without fear. Tilikum helped expose SeaWorld, and even though he is gone, Cecil has helped to expose the ...

JULY 29th: INTERNATIONAL TIGER DAY The 29th of July is a day dedicated to celebrating the existence of tigers and to spread awareness on their endangered status. Here are some shocking facts about tigers: 1. Today, there are more tigers in captivity than in the wild. 2. Only around 3,200 tigers are believed to be left in the wild. 3. Demand for tiger parts is driving the poaching activities which are driving tigers towards extinction. 4. Habitat loss is another major threat to tigers. We kno...
