Spreading education about animal welfare to the next generation!!
Last week, 27 children from Vientiane Pattana International School's Grade 3 came for a tour of the ACRES Lao Wildlife Sanctuary. The children, aged 8 and 9 years old, came to have a look around the Sanctuary, learn about animal welfare and to see what we do here.
We had great fun as they saw animals in real life for the first time...try explaining what a binturong is to an 8 year old!!
The highlights of the visit for them were...

The ACRES wildlife sanctuary needs constant maintenance for it to provide our animals with a comfortable living environment. The weather has been very dry and hot in the past two months and it has been forcing our tortoises to seek shelter, only coming out in the later afternoon or when it is cooler. We had initially put up shade nets to filter the sun but this has been insufficient.
To improve shade conditions, we are currently transplanting Banana plants and putting up bigger shade nets to pr...

Quoted after the much famous Ghandi,
"The best way to loose yourself is to loose yourself in service to others"
Our volunteers definitely are living proof of it!
From all of us here at ACRES, "You are never just a volunteer.
You are part of our team; and this team could not have reached new heights without teamwork!"
Never question the value of volunteers! :) We believe.

King Kong - the one with the chain on the neck:
This week we are sharing with you an interesting macaque rescue story! While Suzzie is recovering progressively at ARVC, the Macaque Rescue Team have been spending their days attending to a young male macaque with a chain on its neck. When we first spotted this young one, we knew for sure that he was kept illegally as a pet. Driven from post-trauma of being held captive, King Kong has been living on the streets of an industrial estate. He is extre...

THEIR VOICELESS PAIN
"Close your eyes,
Draw a tight box in your head,
Place yourself in it,
Breath slowly,"
The neighbour next door just being dragged out,
All pens are empty now, but yours,
You are the last they say,
The distant squeals of death have ceased,
You heard your gate open,
You plead for another life in your head,
Wondering what this was all about,
Dragged out,
Struggling and fighting,
You couldn't fight the full grown arms and cold eyes
At your last squeal,
You turned t...

Supporters and volunteers help us make our wishes for the animals come true! Not only by speaking up for animals, calling us for wildlife in distress, but also by dropping off surprise donations in-kind which we love!
Yesterday, we received a surprise delivery of several daily use items such as toilet rolls, cleaning solutions, face masks, gloves, syringes, coffee and tea for our centre. We do not know who you are, but our heartfelt thanks goes out to you for taking time off your Saturday morni...

These children agree that we can still love animals and learn about them without seeing them in person or the animals in captivity.

From ACRES Lao PDR "In the first week of this month, we had four new animals in our care!
The four macaques were donated in the middle of the night. The monk who brought them said he had traveled from a temple in southern Lao. He explained that the temple is very close to what is know locally as a 'monkey forest' and is home to many macaques. He told us that people will often catch them to be kept as pets or tourist 'attractions' but that they will often get donated to the temple too.
Having h...

Since the opening of our outdoor sanctuary on the 14th Nov 2013, we are constantly making improvements to it. Our latest development would be the outdoor kitchen, that is being used to prepare food and enrichment for our animals now.
Kalai, our Head of Animal Care, started getting the kitchen up with quality recycled materials and here are some of the pictures how the kitchen came about just from an unfriendly slope and a narrow pathway we had!
And our heartfelt thanks goes to Mr Pomp, our supp...
