It's tough to be a Turtle Guardian - long hours of patrolling and monitoring means trekking up and down long stretch of beaches in the dark every night which can be extremely tiring, camping on the beach while being buffered by strong winds and heavy rain, cooking your own food and sometimes getting bitten by sandflies. Here's a look at some of our Turtle Guardians in Melaka! Did you know that it costs about RM12,000 to pay one graduate or local community member to be a Turtle Guardian for the 6-month peak nesting season from April to September each year? Turtle hatchlings face hazards even before they hatch. From the moment their eggs are deposited in the sand, predators begin eyeing these tasty morsels, be they animals or humans.
