Sunday August 23, 2009JOHOR BARU: "Michael Jackson" lives – as a tiger in the privately owned Saleng Zoo here. One of the five tiger cubs born in the zoo recently is to be named after the deceased King of Pop, zoo caretaker and animal trainer J. Siva Priyan said. "I thought Michael Jackson would be a fitting name for one of the male cubs. "For the rest, I have yet to decide," he said, adding that since the zoo was opened 16 years ago, it had successfully bred over 50 tigers. The cuddly tiger c...

View: Management Of Condos Must Get Rid Of This Petty Ruling 22nd Aug 2009, by Green Animal Shelter & Sanctuary (GrASS)
Saturday August 15, 2009I BOUGHT a three-month old Shihtzu when I was in college. I lived alone in a condominium with my dog, though there was a ruling that there ought to be "no pets" on high-rise buildings. Everyone knew of this, but nobody really bothered. My puppy never gave anyone any problem and I received no complaint, either. Now, I am working and have bought a condominium unit in Petaling Jaya. Although the usual rule of "no pets" applies here, too, I have seen and heard some of these ...

View: Time To Relax No-Pet Ruling 22nd Aug 2009, by Green Animal Shelter & Sanctuary (GrASS)
Saturday August 22, 2009I AGREE with Animal Lover that "Management of condos must get rid of this petty ruling," (The Star, Aug 15). I think it is time the ruling is changed to keep up with the times. Most people cannot afford landed property especially in places like Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru and most old folks live longer and alone with their children away earning a living. Take my husband and I for example. We are both retired, in our sixties and our children work overseas. We are...

Friday August 21, 2009 By TAN SIN CHOW THE water within a 100m radius off the Gurney Drive coast in Penang is now less murky and smelly, thanks to the 200,000 effective microorganism (EM) mud balls which were thrown into the sea on Aug 8. Article: Caring For The Abandoned 21st Aug 2009, by Green Animal Shelter & Sanctuary (GrASS)
Friday August 21, 2009By JEREMY TAN THEY sit forlornly in cages, waiting for the day a kind-hearted soul would take them home and shower them with affection, failing which, their brief but innocent lives are cut short. All they long for is a chance, but for the majority of animals brought in to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' (SPCA) Penang shelter, there is no happy ending. Most have to be put down as the numbers brought in far exceed the shelter's capacity to...

Article: Are Our Forests And Wildlife Doomed? 21st Aug 2009, by Green Animal Shelter & Sanctuary (GrASS)
Friday August 21, 2009IN reference to the letter by Tan Sri Salleh Mohd Nor, the President, Malaysia Nature Society "Nurture this natural treasure" (The Star, Aug 19), I wish to congratulate him and the Malaysian Nature Society for striving to protect our forests and wildlife. I have been hiking for the last 30 years in many forest areas in Malaysia, and can thus see the severe problem of protected species of fauna, flora and wild animals being destroyed to near extinction. I am pessimistic tha...

View: Nurture This Natural Treasure 20th Aug 2009, by Green Animal Shelter & Sanctuary (GrASS)
Thursday August 20, 2009JOHOR is among the most developed states and the richness of the diverse biodiversity is still there as seen in the several parks and protected areas. Mt Belumut, Sedili, River, Mt Ledang (Ophir) and the islands off Mersing coast are some of them, among which Panti forest reserve is a definite "hidden natural treasure". The mountain range of Panti, in the Kota Tinggi district, may be only about 1,500 feet but the richness of the biodiversity is unequalled, offering an a...

View: Who’s Protecting Our Wildlife? 19th Aug 2009, by Green Animal Shelter & Sanctuary (GrASS)
Wednesday August 19, 2009MALAYSIA may not be the world's largest wildlife smuggling centre but if nothing is done now, it probably won't be long before it can lay claim to that title. This seems to be the grim reality on the status of wildlife, protected or otherwise, in our country, which is one of the 12th mega diverse countries in the world. RM2.1mil is the value of the seizures from illegal wildlife trade in Malaysia from at least 12 major enforcement actions conducted between July and Decem...

Wednesday August 19, 2009 By DERRICK VINESH FARMERS in Penang should tap the vast potential in agro-tourism and agro- recreation to broaden their scope of business, state Agriculture, Agro-based Industries, Rural Development and Flood Miti-gation Committee chairman Law Choo Kiang said.
