Oh Gosh, Slithery Encounters On The First Day Of The Snake Year? 11th Feb 2013, by AnimalCare
I am not superstitious and I do not observe taboos, so I shall tell the story as it is.
You know how it is that this year is the Year of the Snake and people send wishes saying “May the Year of the Water Snake bring you….(all the blessings for a good year)”?
Well, late last night, as I was closing the patio door, I saw Rosie, Daffodil, Timmy and Ginger surrounding a dead snake near the patio.
Again?
Yes, again.
And this one was big. Not huge, just bigger than the last one.
As I...

Elephant, My Friend – Joe The Little Pygmy Elephant, Is Learning To Have Fun Again 10th Feb 2013, by AnimalCare
I think we were all appalled and deeply saddened to learn about the deaths of so many pygmy elephants in Sabah recently.
But now, Joe, the surviving baby elephant is learning to have fun again, all thanks to his caretakers who are taking really good care of him. However, they are not sure if Joe would still die of a broken heart. It takes a lot of work and dedication to help Joe adjust to his new life.
This Chinese New Year, let us not forget that many lives out there who need our compassion and...

Photos From Volunteers 10th Feb 2013, by SPCA Penang
"My boyfriend and I (English couple) were visiting Penang and found out online about the SPCA shelter and emailed to see if we could pop by. We spent 2 days at the shelter walking the dogs and then a couple of hours each day playing with the younger dogs and puppies who could not be taken outside the shelter. The vet students working there informed us that the dogs do not get taken outside the shelter if nobody volunteers - which instantly made us realise the importance of people stopping by! Th...

Wolly's Story 10th Feb 2013, by SPCA Sarawak
Had a rubber band tied to his right hind leg when he was barely weeks old so it needed to be amputated. Fostered at a home and returned to the shelter after he'd recovered from surgery and had had two vaccinations only to be adopted a few months later by someone who didn't care about him and left him to roam in public like a stray. Good thing he was spotted by a friend and brought back to the shelter but what now?

Happy Fin-Free Chinese New Year! 10th Feb 2013, by AnimalCare
For this year’s Chinese New Year and moving forward, we would like to encourage everyone to adopt a strong and very firm stand on not eating shark fin.
Sabah government’s ban on shark fin: http://myanimalcare.org/2011/11/15/sabah-may -be-the-first-in-asia-to-ban-shark-trade/
Here is a message from Human Society International:
Chinese New Year begins this weekend, and people around the world will celebrate. It’s a time when family, friends, and neighbors get together and wish for ...

Peaceful And Happy Get-Togethers 10th Feb 2013, by AnimalCare
Gong Xi Fa Cai, everyone!
This morning was indeed special because Mr G and Rosie allowed Starry to join in for breakfast!
So, here’s the Patio-Family having their Chinese New Year breakfast all together.
Daffodil, the matriarch of the clan.
She’s the smallest in size, but the wisest and she puts peace above all else.
Nothing beats age when it comes to wisdom, even for cats!
The inside brood, after breakfast.
Pole also puts peace above all else. Maybe the female felines are wis...

Updates On 9th Feb 2013 9th Feb 2013, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
ACRES remains puzzled by the comments from RWS and AVA in response to our appeal (see The Straits Times article below):
1. “When contacted, the AVA said it visited RWS during a fireworks display in January but found that the dolphins were not affected”.
According to scientific research, anthropogenic noise is a known stressor for cetaceans, which have very sensitive hearing.
How did AVA ascertain that the dolphins were not affected, which appears to contradict the scientific studie...
