The more than 100 quail chicks found discarded in a rubbish bin on Oct 27 were discovered outside Singapore’s only licensed quail farm, Quailico Eggs, The Straits Times has learnt. The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) found the 106 live quail chicks in a green rubbish bin in Lim Chu Kang, along with hundreds of lifeless chicks and unhatched eggs. 3rd Nov 2024, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

106 LIVE QUAIL CHICKS RESCUED FROM A BIN On 27th Oct 2024 late at night, a concerned caller to our wildlife rescue hotline reported chirping sounds from a green bin in Lim Chu Kang. Inside, a quail chick was found atop a black trash bag, with more chirping sounds from below. Sadly, we found the bag to contain 106 live chicks, in addition to lifeless chicks and unhatched eggs. It was a frustrating find for us. And despite our best efforts, none of the chicks survived. We have filed a case w...

𝐒𝐄𝐏 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐔𝐏: 𝟐𝟗 𝐆𝐋𝐔𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐏 𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐒 Do ‘pests’ deserve a violent death? After all, like us, these animals feel pain and fear. Glue traps make pest control cheap and easy, but they also show how we treat animals, influencing society’s values, especially for the young. The colourful packaging with cartoon rodents and words like "clean" and "non-toxic" makes these products seem less harmful than...

𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐍: 𝐏𝐎𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐆𝐋𝐔𝐄 As we advocate for a ban on glue traps in Singapore, commercially purchased glue for poaching birds is a growing concern. ACRES attended to recent reports involving wildlife victims such as white-throated kingfisher, olive-backed sunbirds and Oriental magpie robin. Unfortunately, all these birds died from stress. 𝐍𝐎 𝐃𝐈𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 🐮🐶🐱🐷🐐 We often celebrate the love, playfulness, curiosity, and affection of dogs, but we may not know that other animals such as cows share many of these same beautiful qualities? Just like our beloved dogs, cows are sentient beings—they can form strong bonds, feel joy, and even mourn. 🐾💔 Yet, we often treat them so differently even though they both deserve our compassion and kindness. One simple way to show our compassi...

𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 In August 2024, ACRES received reports of pigeon culling in Ang Mo Kio. During our visits, we found bread and vegetables that were potentially tossed from units above, despite clear "Do Not Feed" signs. ACRES has been engaging with feeders (if known), with town councils and also filing reports of feeding for enforcement action. Feeding pigeons, though well-intentioned brings more suffering to anima...

𝐀𝐔𝐆 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐔𝐏 𝐎𝐅 𝟐𝟎 𝐆𝐋𝐔𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐏 𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐒 It is indeed heartening to learn that members of the public were our ‘eyes’ and ‘ears’ by reporting these cases to us. The use of glue traps does not solve the root causes of rodent issues. This still boils down to proper food waste management and curbing littering and feeders through effective enforcement and regular outreach/education. Our follow...

18th Sep 2024, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

All good things must come to an end. Only then will extraordinary things begin. Our avian enclosure will soon be demolished to make way for a sewer system. This opens opportunities for newer, bigger projects to enhance the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre infrastructure and optimise our resources. The avian enclosure had rehabilitated countless birds from orioles to eagles, but it was also built to serve multi-species such as pythons, monitor lizards, and even otters. With the help of corporate vo...

Reunited by Love: A Mother’s Brave Rescue While feeding at the canal, a devoted Waterhen heard the faint calls of her chick. Without hesitation, she ran towards the condo boundary where her little one was stranded. In a swift and graceful move, she gently gathered her chick, her maternal instincts guiding her every action. For a while, she stood, carefully assessing the situation. Unable to safely climb back up with her chick, she paused, pondering the best way to ensure their safety. Finall...
