Argentina’s Vegan Mondays 5th Dec 2017, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
ONE STEP FORWARD.
THANK YOU, ARGENTINA!
“In a bid to start a debate on health and the national diet, it has instituted meat-free Mondays. For one lunch each week, the canteen (at Casa Rosada – tag “Casa Rosada”) will only serve vegan options to the 500-plus employees, including President Mauricio Macri.
Governments can do more than lead by example. Portugal passed a law this year requiring a vegan option at public institutions.”

A SECOND BITE OF THE B̶I̶S̶C̶U̶I̶T̶ APPLE
Biscuit, a Chinese soft-shelled turtle, had been attacked by another animal before he was found in a drain and promptly rescued by a kind member of public. Biscuit is on his road to recovery and will be provided a home at our wildlife rescue centre.
Non-native to Singapore, these turtles end up in our soups, and often released in the wild by the uninformed.
To sponsor Biscuit’s friends at ACRES, please consider becoming Wildlife Supporter: h...

Here's the ACRES story, kindly created and organised by the tea...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, AS IT SHOULD BE!
You can do your part as an animal-friendly tourist this holiday season by making conscious choices that do not involve cruelty to animals.
As World Animal Protection rightly puts it, "If you can ride, hug, or take a selfie with a wild animal, chances are the venue is cruel. Don’t go!"
Here are some tips, don’t forget to share!

DRENCHED IN SWEAT FROM HARD WORK BUT WITH THE BRIGHTEST SMILES!
Educators from Holy Innocents High School donned track pants and T-shirt instead of their usual work attires to volunteer at ACRES. They also contributed donations-in-kind, such as wheelbarrows and bamboo racks to help keep our overheads low. We wrapped up the day with a short tour at the sanctuary to learn more about the illegal wildlife trade in Singapore.

BOX TURTLES RESCUED, THANKS TO A PYTHON
Early this month, our rescue team was called to relocate a reticulated python stranded at a construction site. The rescue team then spied two Malayan box turtles huddled together on a dry patch at the same construction site. The duo was released into a suitable habitat just adjacent to the site.

How A Turkey Became My Best Friend 22nd Nov 2017, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
FOR A KIND AND THOUGHTFUL THANKSGIVING
Some of us may kick off the holiday season with Thanksgiving and a moment of reflection, and we thought to share this beautiful story of Peeper, a turkey, and how he shared a special bond with his human companion.
“I know many people consider turkeys and chickens and all fowl to be good for nothing but food, with no emotions or feelings, but I found this to be far from the truth. These birds are creatures of love, tenderness, knowledge, and a strong awa...

ANIMALS LIVE EMOTIONAL LIVES
We often relate animal sentience to apes, elephants, dogs and cats– or farm animals– that they can feel just like you and me. But do we readily extend this notion to all other wild animals who may hiss and scratch, or be without expressive eyebrows and vocal chords?
A kind and considerate resident called us for two civets who could not find their way out of the house. Being nocturnal, the duo spent the day snoozing together, but were eventually relocated to a s...

EKANS SET FREE 17th Nov 2017, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
EKANS SET FREE
Ekans the sunbeam snake was tangled in construction netting, and thanks to the workers at the excavation site who called for help, Ekans is free once again!
Sunbeam snakes burrow and it is likely this behaviour led to an entanglement. Ekans is the third sunbeam snake we have rescued from similar material.
We receive an average of 21 calls a day to our 24-hr wildlife rescue. While we strive to help every single wild animal we can, it is not possible to make our operations sust...

CUTENESS CURSE: ABANDONED HEDGEHOGS - ILLEGAL AND CRUEL
Many would go “Aw, so cute!” when they see a hedgehog. And while they are often sold online, it is illegal to sell or keep hedgehogs in Singapore.
Pictured right were 5 abandoned hedgehogs were left in a plastic tub at a Housing Development Board refuse collection, and on the left, an injured hedgehog who was found inside the drain of a nature reserve. Abandonment is not only illegal, but also cruel, and irresponsible pet owners shoul...
